We get to know about Cara’s life through her 12 sessions with a job counselor. We only hear Cara’s side of the conversation, a clever and inventive narration style. Cara is a Dominican woman living in NYC and finds herself in a financial situation where she needs to return to work after years of being out of the workforce. It paints an interesting picture of life in Little Dominca, NYC, and what American culture looks like through the eyes of an immigrant. It’s heartfelt, poignant, funny, and touching. After reading the book, I wish I could spend an afternoon with the fictitious Cara while she entertained me with her life stories.
