Penner’s first novel, we follow two timelines and three characters. One in modern day where a woman, Caroline, goes on her anniversary trip to London alone after learning of her husband’s infidelity, the other in Georgian London with a female apothecary who covertly dispenses poisons to women to kill men (and only men!). Fun premise. I felt like the motivations behind the characters were lacking and unconvincing. I wanted to root for the apothecary (kill those evil misogynists!) but couldn’t stand behind a lot of her motives. Caroline felt too unsure of herself and then things just felt too “lucky”. It was still a fun read if you don’t pull too hard at the loose ends.
