Author

This is my third Bill Bryson book after reading In A Sunburned Country, Notes from a Small Island, and The Mother Tongue. As long as you can look past the occasional dated sexist jab, he is genuinely funny. This one follows Bryson and his friend “Stephen Katz” as they attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail and promptly find themselves in over their heads.

It did not make me want to hike the AT. It did make me appreciate the people who do. Bryson has a talent for turning discomfort, poor planning, and mild disaster into sharp, memorable storytelling.
