I accidentally mixed up “Comfort of Crows” with another book on my list and started listening, expecting a fantasy. It turned out to be a collection of essays by a naturalist from Tennessee. While I have great respect for naturalists and love nature and creatures, much of this book made me reflect, sometimes uncomfortably, on my own environmental choices, like maintaining a traditional lawn rather than a natural pollinator yard. Despite this, the essays are beautifully written. A favorite moment was the notion that the first bird you see in the new year sets the tone for the year ahead. When the author wrote her essay, she saw a crow, which resonated with me as I listened, surrounded by the raucous calls of crows nearby. It felt almost serendipitous, like they knew. If you’re considering this book, just be sure you know what you’re diving into to avoid my mix-up!
