When Women Were Dragons

Rating

7

Author

Set in the 1950s, this novel imagines a world where a “mass dragoning” occurs,an event in which thousands of women, many of them fed up and overlooked, literally transform into dragons. The story is told from the perspective of Alex, a young girl whose aunt dragoned and whose cousin is taken in by her family afterward.

The premise is bold and fascinating, and I loved the metaphorical power behind it. That said, it felt long to me ,like it might have worked better as a short story or novella. Still, it sparked a rich, layered discussion at book club, which says a lot about the themes and questions it raises.
