What can I even say about this book that hasn’t already been said? If you’re not familiar with the premise, James is a reimagining of Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, told from the perspective of Jim, an enslaved man and Huck’s companion.
It’s brilliantly written: rich, layered, and deeply thoughtful. Everett gives voice and depth to a character who was originally sidelined, and in doing so, he reshapes the entire narrative. There’s also some deeply satisfying revenge woven in, which made for powerful, cathartic moments.
Fiction or not, stories like this remind us of a reality that did happen, and that must not be forgotten. This book is important, beautifully done, and absolutely worth reading.
