The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden

I loved *The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared*, so I chose The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden as my book club pick this year, hoping it would be just as good. It’s a Swedish translation (much like *My Friends*), which makes me think that Swedes are super funny—but in the driest, zaniest way.

This book spans about 45 years and bounces between South Africa and Sweden, with some delightfully odd Israeli and Chinese characters thrown in. Nombeko, the main character, is a long-suffering, highly intelligent girl whose talents are mostly wasted on de-escalating catastrophes. The convergence of characters and plot lines with the escalating absurdity is just so fun. Loved it.
