The Serviceberry

What would it be like to live in a gift economy? Robin Wall Kimmerer invites us to imagine an alternative to capitalism, drawing on the wisdom and practices of Indigenous peoples. She uses the humble serviceberry as a way to explore reciprocity, generosity, and what it means to be in relationship with the natural world.

It is a short read, but thought-provoking and beautifully written. Kimmerer blends personal reflection, cultural insight, and ecological awareness in a way that lingers long after you finish. It made me curious to actually go out and find serviceberries myself, but more importantly, it left me reflecting on what abundance really means and how our lives might look if we organized them around care and reciprocity rather than scarcity and profit.
