I think the trope of “personal robot gains sentience and runs away” has been done before, but not quite like this. Our protagonist here is a cuddle-bunny robot who has gone autodidactic. We get to follow Annie on her journey toward what might just be consciousness, as she seeks to become more human.
It feels especially relevant now, on the cusp of so many AI breakthroughs, and raises questions about identity, autonomy, and what it means to be alive. The ending surprised me, and I loved it!
A sharp, unsettling, and strangely tender story about what makes us human.
