I went into this book completely blind, and for the first half I was questioning whether I will ever do that again because it felt like such a slog and I had no idea where it was going. So, do not be like me and go in blind on this one.

It helps (in my opinion) to know upfront that this is historical fiction based on a true story. It follows an orphaned French girl who is marooned on a desolate island off the coast of Canada in the 1540s and somehow survives. And not only survives, but goes on to make something of her life afterward.

The setting is bleak and brutal, but it made finally learning the end of her story feel worth braving the miserable cold right alongside her.

A tough but fascinating survival tale rooted in real history.
