Every year my kids’ school district sends home a paperback book for all the elementary students to read over the next month with their families. I love it. I think it’s such a fun idea. This year the book was The Wild Robot.

I absolutely loved this one. I don’t usually read much middle grade or YA unless it’s with my kids, but this story completely won me over. We follow Roz, a robot who becomes marooned on an island full of wild animals. To survive, she begins mimicking the other creatures and slowly learns how to live among them. Over time she not only survives but forms friendships and becomes part of the island community.

There were so many elements that made this great for reading together and talking about as a family, things like the circle of life, death, instincts, kindness, and community. It is all presented in a way that kids can really grasp.

I also loved the characters. The giant robot and all the woodland creatures she encounters made for such a fun cast, especially when reading aloud. I love doing all the voices for my kids, so this one was a blast.

We finished the book and immediately ordered the box set so we can start book two and find out what happens next with dear Roz.
