I would not describe myself as someone really up on pop culture, my knowledge is limited pop-culture-adjacent, at best, and has always been that way. Yet I am still interested in pop culture, just never motivated enough to dive into it. As a child of the 90’s myself, I was interested in this book but worried I would miss a lot of references or feel alienated by it. On the contrary, this book feels super approachable, partly because I think the author (Rob, as he refers to himself) does a good job critiquing things without arrogrance that he knows more or has a more refined taste in music or something. I’m highly entertained by the subject matter (so nostalgic!) but more so by the author himself and the way he describes things. For example he’s talking about the Brandy and Monica performance at the VMA awards of “The Boy is Mine” and describes the physical distance between them as feeling “court ordered”. Rob says things in such a confident definitive way I just naturally agree with whatever analysis he’s come up with. It’s a fun listen and took me way longer than it should’ve because I had to keep pulling up music videos and songs he brought up that were too nostalgic not to immediately listen to.
