I’ve been a fan of Ben Folds since his Ben Folds Five days in the ’90s, and his memoir “A Dream About Lightning Bugs” was nostalgic and allowed a closer look at the stories behind the songs I love. It’s thoughtful and well-written, infused with the self-awareness and dry, quirky humor that defines Ben Folds. Listening to him read the audiobook was and added bonus—it’s almost essential for memoirs to be read by the author, in my opinion. I had the opportunity to see him live earlier this month when he toured my city. The excitement was real; I logged on the minute tickets went on sale and managed to score front row seats. My only regret? Not reading his memoir before the show. Had I done so, I would have known to shout “Rock this B,” triggering an original, (probably delightful) improv song. Lesson learned for next time.
