“Charlotte’s Web” was recently sent home by my kindergartner’s school district—a cool initiative to get every kid in the district reading with their parents. Revisiting this classic since my own childhood was a new experience, especially as a parent. E.B. White’s tender handling of themes like friendship, loss, and the cycle of life in the book’s closing chapters is deeply moving and made me cry again, just like when I read it as a kid. Discussing these themes with my five-year-old opened up rich conversations about death and dying, which were both challenging and meaningful. This timeless story not only entertains but also provides valuable life lessons for both children and adults.
