My reading tastes are eclectic, clearly, but I always have a soft spot for a good murder mystery, especially when it comes with a quirky twist. “Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone” hit the right note. It stands out with a metafictional element: the narrator, a murder mystery writer, suddenly finds himself enmeshed in a real-life murder mystery that challenges everything he knows about murder mystery writing. Using his literary skills, the narrator attempts to unravel the mystery for the reader, crafting the story as he goes. Despite my numerous ventures into this genre, I’m no detective—this book (and pretty much every murder mystery) managed to surprise me. The mystery was intricate and challenging, yet maintained a sense of fun that kept me hooked from start to finish.
