Set in the 1980’s with a Californian backdrop, we follow two generations of Rivas. The story goes back and forth from past to present as we learn about the history of the parents of the four Rivas children, surfer kids grown up on the beach of Malibu. The present takes place leading up to the biggest annual end-of-summer party. Celebrities, caterers, drugs, alcohol and anyone else that knows about the party will be there. All we know is the house ends up in flames. Taylor Jenkins Reid developed characters that you are rooting for and also have enough understanding of each one and their motives that you can see catastrophe ensuing and all you can do is sit back and watch it come. It’s poignant, funny, and enteraining.
