I have a healthy skepticism of hypnosis, which may be ironic, considering I’m certified in and regularly use EMDR in my own work. (To be clear, EMDR and hypnosis aren’t the same thing. I don’t need to get into the weeds, just noting that you’d think it would make me more open to hypnosis.) But I think it’s actually because of that that I’m skeptical. That said, this was an interesting story about a client who, during hypnosis, unexpectedly began exploring past lives. The psychiatrist’s account of her sessions, and the broader implications they raise about life, death, and meaning, makes for a fascinating read, even if you’re not totally sure what you believe about it all or maintain a different belief system.
