Harari’s books have landed in my all-time top ten. Sapiens explores the history of humankind, and Homo Deus looks toward the future. Nexus turns its attention to AI.
Harari is a historian, and he writes from that perspective. His work always feels thoughtful, well-researched, and deeply coherent. That historian’s lens is my favorite part of Sapiens and Homo Deus. In this book, though, it also made the reading experience feel a bit slower for me. I was most interested in his ideas about AI, but a large portion of the book is spent tracing the history of human communication before fully moving into the AI discussion.
That said, I still really appreciate his perspective and where he is coming from. Freaked out about AI? Read this book. Not freaked out about AI? Also read this book. And let’s hope that some of the people actually making decisions about our future are paying attention to the questions and cautions he raises.
