I was so excited to read another novel by Jess Walter because I absolutely loved Beautiful Ruins. This one also landed for me.
We follow Rhys Kinnick, an older journalist who finally hits his breaking point and leaves his entire life behind to live off the grid. Seven years later, his grandchildren show up on his doorstep because their mother has disappeared. This pulls him back into civilization and forces him to rely on others again, whether he wants to or not.
The story dips its toe into themes of Christian nationalism, the ways people respond when they are pushed too far, and ultimately the tenderness and difficulty of learning how to need others. It is thoughtful, grounded, and full of heart.
I loved this.
