This was not my own pick, it was a book chosen for book club. I point that out because historical fiction (as aforementioned) is not my genre of choice. That being said, I really enjoyed this book. I wish the author’s note was at the beginning of the book instead of the end, because I didn’t know until I finished the book that it is based on true characters, includes actual letters from these characters, and a lot of true history. This made it a lot more interesting and hope I’m doing someone the favor of letting them know that before they read it. It’s set in the civil war and follows three females: an activist/abolotionist, an enslaved girl, and a plantation owner. Kelly did a great job capturing the perspective of each to create a rich story on a colorful backdrop.
