For starters, this book (audio version) is 20.5 hours, which means it is not for the faint of heart. Of course, Bono narrates it himself so you get to hear him tell his own stories, and the production quality was truly impressive; peppered with beautiful music and other effects. We learn a lot about Bono’s young life, the loss of his mother, the beginning of U2, and the back story to a lot of the songs. A fair amount of the book is spent on Bono’s activism, which I thought was done tastefully, but if that’s not what you came for then you’ll have to skip over about half the book. If I have to spend 20 hours with someone, Bono is at the top of the list, even more so after finishing the book. He was delightful, honest, insightful, diligent, and thoughtful. It was beautifully written, poetic and poignant, which is no surprise Bono as a gifted lyricist. It probably goes without saying, if you’re not interested in U2 or Bono, then skip this one, but if you want details on one of the biggest rockstars in history- settle in for the long haul.
