Someone’s shadow goes missing, then another, and another, until it becomes an inexplicable epidemic. Along with the loss of shadows goes the loss of memory and the ability to royally screw up reality. The idea of exploring memory and how that affects us on an indvidual and societal level sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, I don’t feel like Shepherd pulled it off. I was committed to finishing this book and 18 hours later still felt somewhat lost in the narrative, details left unexplained, and this particular exploration of memory wasn’t thought provoking (to me). For example, they talk about a special elephant and how it has a collective memory with the herd. I was so excited to see how she would weave that into the plot and how it related to humanity. I feel like the ball was dropped on the topic. For such a long book, I don’t think there should be any loose ends, instead I was left with more questions than answers. I loved her book, The Cartographers, but would say this one could be skipped and not missed.
