Growing up, “Practical Magic” with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman was one of my favorite movies—I’ve always been drawn to all things witchy. The movie is actually based on a book, which is part of a series of four by Alice Hoffman. This month, my book club chose “The Book of Magic,” the final installment in that series. While I haven’t read any of the previous books, I jumped into this one armed only with my knowledge of Bullock’s and Kidman’s portrayals in the movie (which I haven’t watched in a few decades). Although “The Book of Magic” can technically be read as a standalone, I felt like I was missing out on a lot of the backstory, especially since there are so many characters to keep track of. For anyone new to the series, I’d recommend starting from the beginning to fully appreciate the depth and development of the story. Despite this, I really enjoyed the magical elements of the book, and it was a pleasant surprise to see that the male characters were also practitioners of magic, which added a unique dimension to the story.
