This was my first time reading The Color Purple. I know, I know. I love reading a Pulitzer Prize winning book and thinking, “well obviously that won the Pulitzer Prize.” That’s how I felt about this one. An epistolary novel told through letters to God and Celie’s sister gives us an examination of race, gender inequality, sexism, religion, generational trauma, education, and the healing power of empathic connection. The characters were rich and the story engrossing. I listened to the book read by the author, which was a treat. If you choose the audio route, find the one where Alice Walker reads it.
