Set in the 1930s South, “The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store” explores the lives of Jewish and Black communities living side by side. Despite their differences, these communities share a bond of mutual respect and care. The story is rich and engaging, though I found the large cast of characters, with names like “Paper” and “Fatty,” a bit challenging to track. It was worth the build up of all the different backstories to get woven together for the ending. Fun read, and even though it was fiction, a good look at a history I was unaware of.
