This biography follows Senator Frank Church of Idaho, his efforts to end the Vietnam War, his leadership of the Church Committee investigating the CIA, and his run for president. I went in knowing very little about him or the impact he had both nationally and in his home state of Idaho.
It’s thoroughly researched and well written, and I appreciated learning about a figure in American politics I’d somehow missed entirely. That said, it’s long, and unless you’re particularly interested in Cold War politics, intelligence oversight, or Idaho history, it can feel dense at times.
Still, I’m glad I read it. It gave me a deeper understanding of a complicated era and one politician’s attempt to hold powerful systems accountable. Would be cool if we had more of that now.
