The Women

This was for my “book about a war” category from my library book challenge, plus it came highly recommended. Admittedly, I knew very little about the Vietnam War. I think Hannah accomplished what she set out to do with this novel: bring attention to the women who helped in the war (many nurses) that have largely been unacknowledged and forgotten. I really liked reading the parts about what it was like for the nurses and medics in the military hospitals and she did a great job capturing the nuances of how the war itself was viewed by Americans, both civilians and vets. Definitely a complex topic. As a trauma therapist myself, the middle section was frustrating reading about the utter lack of knowledge and validation around PTSD and furthermore erasing the women in the war’s experiences. I knocked down a few points from my rating due to lack of character development and some frustrating plot points that I felt were unnecessary. Overall, glad I read it.
