After receiving two recommendations, I decided to pick up “Tipping the Velvet” by Sarah Waters, a novel set in the 1890s that explores the queer community in Victorian England. Despite being written in 1998, the narrative is beautifully crafted, immersing readers in a world of heartache, tragedy, and the often frustrating poor choices made by the protagonist. While some aspects of the story stretched my belief—considering I’m far removed from that era—the book offers valuable insights into the lives and challenges of its characters. Regardless of its historical accuracy, I found it to be an enlightening read. However, it’s worth noting that the book is quite lengthy and unfolds slowly, which might not suit everyone’s taste. Additionally, it contains more erotic scenes than I typically prefer. Overall, though, “Tipping the Velvet” is a compelling glimpse into a vividly portrayed subculture of the past.
