I am late to the game on this one. I had heard about it for years but went in not knowing what it was about. I chose the audio version, and it is read by Meryl Streep, which honestly made the experience. There is no inner monologue in my head that could compete with Meryl Streep reading this book. She was that good.

The story centers on Laura, a former actress whose three daughters press her to relive the summer she dated a now-famous actor. The romance took place when they were both performing Our Town at a summer theatre in Michigan called Tom Lake.

Laura, our narrator, has a grounded, self-possessed tone. She does not inflate herself or exaggerate, but she also is not self-deprecating. She is willing to share most of the details with her daughters, though she keeps a few for herself, leaving the reader to savor those moments instead.

I loved it.
