“Trust,” a Co-Pulitzer Prize winner, is a book you might want to know a little about before diving in. Structured in four parts, it begins with a fictional book about a character named Andrew Bevel—except it’s not really him. This first section is a fictional retelling of Bevel’s life under a pseudonym, intended as a form of slander. The second part presents itself as unfinished notes for a memoir. In the third, we follow Bevel’s secretary as she ghostwrites his memoir to counteract the slanderous book. The final section reveals Bevel through his late wife’s journals. As a reader, you’re left to sift through these layers and decide for yourself who Bevel really is and what his reality might be. I’ve never read anything quite like it; it’s both unique and engaging.
